People with chronic kidney disease (CKD) often experience faster aging of the heart and blood vessels, which raises the risk of heart problems beyond traditional factors like high blood pressure or cholesterol. One early sign is reduced blood flow in the tiny vessels that supply the heart, measured by a positron emission tomography (PET) scan using a marker called myocardial flow reserve (MFR).

Adapting and Testing a Novel Digital Health Tool (PREVENT) to Improve Health Behavior Counseling and Cardiovascular Health in Rural Primary Care Clinics

Testing a digital health tool to improve weight and heart care talks in rural clinics

📍 Washington University in St. Louis · St Louis, MO · Get directions →

The focus on this application is low-income, rural patients, since cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevalence is 40% higher among rural than urban residents. Health behavior counseling and follow-up care are required for patients with an elevated body mass index who have increased risk for CVD.

Pragmatic Randomised Trial of High Or Standard PHosphAte Targets in End-stage Kidney Disease (PHOSPHATE)

Testing whether aiming for lower blood phosphate helps people with end-stage kidney disease

📍 Royal Prince Alfred Hosptial · Camperdown, New South Wales · Get directions →

During end-stage kidney disease, clinical guidelines suggest reducing elevated phosphate levels in the blood. However, the effect of lowering blood phosphate levels on important patient-centred outcomes has never been tested.

    Innate Immunity in Allergic Asthma

Testing how immune cell responses to allergens relate to asthma

📍 University of Central Florida · Orlando, FL · Get directions →

The purpose of this study is to determine whether a potential type 2 signature, obtained through stimulation of cell lines with various allergens in vitro, correlates with an allergic or asthmatic disease state ex vivo. This type 2 signature will be multi-hierarchical in nature and will be comprised cell surface receptor expression, pathway activation, and gene upregulation.

The overall goal of this research study is to evaluate a multi-level program called PRAGMATIC-S to improve the delivery of guideline-based asthma care through a unique partnership between clinical practices and schools. PRAGMATIC-S represents a novel approach that addresses multiple barriers to adherence by bridging primary care and schools, ensuring delivery of guideline-based asthma care to urban children across these settings thereby improving adherence to therapy and clinical outcomes.

Precision Medicine Approaches to Renal Osteodystrophy

Testing better ways to measure bone changes in people with chronic kidney disease

📍 Washington University in St. Louis (WashU) · St Louis, MO · Get directions →

Treatment of renal osteodystrophy is impeded by the lack of practical and accurate tools to determine underlying bone turnover. Gold standard bone biopsy is not practical in the clinic for the vast majority of kidney disease patients and parathyroid hormone and bone alkaline phosphatase have insufficient accuracy for turnover type to safely and confidently guide treatment of renal osteodystrophy.

Self-Adjusted Nitrous Oxide: A Feasibility Study in the Setting of Vasectomy

Testing whether self-controlled nitrous oxide during vasectomy lowers pain and anxiety

📍 Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center · Boston, MA · Get directions →

This study is being done to see if nitrous oxide during vasectomy decreases pain and anxiety, and also assess whether patients have better satisfaction when they control their own level of nitrous oxide during the procedure. If we find that patients experience less pain or anxiety with nitrous oxide, it could be suggested that self-adjusted nitrous oxide (SANO) may be a useful tool for improving experience of care during vasectomy.
