Wearable Biofeedback for Swallowing Disorders Rehabilitation in Stroke and Parkinson Disease

Testing a wearable sensor that gives feedback for swallowing therapy in Parkinson’s

📍 Purdue University · West Lafayette, IN · Get directions →

Dysphagia, or difficulty swallowing, is a common symptom of many neurological diseases but its treatment is not well established or easily accessible. To start addressing this gap, the researchers developed and validated a cost-effective wearable surface electromyography (sEMG) biofeedback sensor technology (i-Phagia), optimized to record muscle activity from the head/neck and provide biofeedback to patients and adherence data to clinicians during swallow therapy.

The Cardiovascular Consequences of Sleep Apnea Plus COPD (Overlap Syndrome)

Studying how sleep apnea together with COPD affects heart health

📍 UCSD Sleep Research · La Jolla, CA · Get directions →

Major progress has been made in the area of cardiovascular disease, but we believe that further progress will involve mechanistically addressing underlying respiratory causes including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The most common cause of death in COPD is cardiovascular, although mechanisms are unknown.

Multiple Objective Particle Swarm Optimization Postural Instability Gait Disorder

Testing how scans after deep brain stimulation help assess Parkinson’s gait

📍 University of Minnesota · Minneapolis, MN · Get directions →

Sixty patients will be enrolled in this study who are treated for Parkinson's disease (PD) with bilateral deep brain stimulation of subthalamic nucleus (STN) or globus pallidus (GP), who have a pre- operative 7 Tesla MRI including diffusion tensor imaging for tractography and a postoperative head CT for electrode localization, and in whom at least 3 months have passed since activation of their neurostimulators, for stabilization of clinical stimulator settings. Using their MRI and CT, the investigators will construct patient-specific models of electrical current spread to neuroanatomical tar- gets surrounding the electrode.

The specific aims of the study are: Primary: To determine the presence and regional distribution of microglial activation, as assessed by Fluorine-18 (18F) labeled "Peripheral Benzodiazepine Receptor 06" (PBR06) -PET, in subjects with active Relapsing Remitting Multiple Sclerosis (RRMS), Secondary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis (SPMS), and Alzheimer's Disease (AD) as compared to healthy controls Secondary: 1. To assess the relationship between microglial activation and clinical variables including disease severity and comorbidities (such as pain, fatigue and/or depression), as well as clinical MRI findings (such as lesions and atrophy) 2.

The investigators propose to use the novel SV2a-PET ligand, \[F-18\]SDM-8 to assess synaptic density in progressive multiple sclerosis (PMS) (including primary progressive multiple sclerosis (PPMS) and secondary progressive multiple sclerosis (SPMS)), given its improved imaging characteristics and potential for large scale applicability. The specific aims of the study are: Aim 1: To compare the cortical and subcortical grey matter synaptic density in PMS patients, patients with relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS), and healthy subjects, using a novel \[F-18\] labeled synaptic density PET ligand, \[F-18\]SDM8, also known as \[F-18\]SynvesT-1.
