What is this study?
The researchers will conduct 'Taxi ROADmAP (Realizing Optimization Around Diet And Physical activity)', which also utilizes MOST, and the same 4 obesity intervention components as in SANOS, but targets the overweight/obesity crisis in another at-risk, low socioeconomic status (SES) population, taxi and for-hire vehicle (FHV) drivers (Lyft, Uber, etc.). ROADMAP also utilizes an effectiveness- implementation hybrid type 1 design.

The researchers will conduct 'Taxi ROADmAP (Realizing Optimization Around Diet And Physical activity)', which also utilizes MOST, and the same 4 obesity intervention components as in SANOS, but targets the overweight/obesity crisis in another at-risk, low socioeconomic status (SES) population, taxi and for-hire vehicle (FHV) drivers (Lyft, Uber, etc.). ROADMAP also utilizes an effectiveness- implementation hybrid type 1 design. Hybrid trials, which blend effectiveness and implementation studies, can lead to more rapid translational uptake and more effective implementation. Taxi and FHV drivers are a growing, multilingual, hard-to-reach, predominantly immigrant and minority essential worker population. There are over 750,000 licensed taxi and FHV drivers in in the U.S. and over 185,000 in New York City (NYC). They have higher rates of overweight/obese range body mass index (BMI) than New Yorkers in general (77% vs 56%) and have high rates of elevated waist circumference, sedentary behavior, poor diets, and health care services underutilization. ROADmAP will test 4 evidence- and theory-based (Social Cognitive Theory \[SCT\]) behavior change intervention components. We will use MOST to identify which of the 4 components contribute most significantly and cost-effectively to weight loss among NYC drivers recruited at workplace health fairs (HFs) and virtually. Objectives are to apply MOST to design an optimized version of a scalable, lifestyle intervention for taxi/FHV drivers, and then to conduct a mixed methods multistakeholder process evaluation to facilitate widespread intervention implementation.

- •Taxi/FHV drivers age 21 or older
- •Licensed taxi/FHV driver working full-time (drives at least 35 hours per week)
- •Has been a driver for at least 6 months
- •Says they are seeking help through health fairs (or already used health fair services)
- •Has a phone that can receive text messages and agrees to be audio-recorded
🚫 You may not be able to join if…
- •Pregnant (or might be pregnant) or lactating during the study period
- •Has certain serious chronic diseases like cancer, kidney disease, or liver disease if it may restrict diet
- •Currently has dietary restrictions like a liquid diet
- •Already participated in the study (or has a household member who already participated or agreed)
- •Currently takes GLP-1 weight-loss medicines listed in the study, or is within less than 7 weeks since last dose, or has had/plans weight-loss (bariatric) surgery in the next 12 months

What is this study testing?+

Is it safe? Who makes sure of that?+
This is a mid-stage study (Phase 2), looking at safety and whether the treatment works. Every study is reviewed and monitored by an independent ethics board (called an IRB) whose job is to protect participants, and care is overseen by licensed medical staff. You'll be told the known risks before you agree to anything, and you can stop at any time.
Will I get a placebo instead of the real treatment?+
Some studies compare a treatment against a placebo (an inactive version), and some don't. If this one does, the study team will explain your chances of receiving the active treatment before you decide. Nothing is hidden from you.
I take a GLP-1 medication (like Ozempic or Wegovy). Can I still join?+
Maybe. This study may ask you to pause certain weight or diabetes medications for a period of time (a 'washout') before joining, or it may be looking for people not currently on them. The coordinator will review your medications with you — don't stop any medication on your own.
Does it cost anything? Will I be paid?+
Study-related care is provided at no cost to you. Some studies also pay for your time; the coordinator can tell you if this one does. You should never be asked to pay to take part.
Do I need insurance? Will anyone ask about my immigration status?+
No. You do not need health insurance to take part in a research study, and you will not be asked about your immigration status to join. Taking part is about whether you're a medical fit for the study.
What if English isn't my first language?+
You have the right to understand everything before you agree. Study sites can often provide materials or an interpreter in your language — you can ask the coordinator for one.
Is my information private?+
Yes. Your health information is only shared with the study sites you choose to be contacted by, and only to help match and enroll you. It is never sold, and you can ask us to delete it at any time.
