What is this study?
The main purpose of this Phase 2 double blind, placebo controlled crossover clinical study is to demonstrate the efficacy and safety of CXA-10 in obese adult asthmatics. Obesity induces a chronic systemic inflammatory state characterized by impaired adipokine signaling, pro-inflammatory cytokine responses, inflammatory cell activation and enhanced generation of oxidative inflammatory mediators.

The main purpose of this Phase 2 double blind, placebo controlled crossover clinical study is to demonstrate the efficacy and safety of CXA-10 in obese adult asthmatics. Obesity induces a chronic systemic inflammatory state characterized by impaired adipokine signaling, pro-inflammatory cytokine responses, inflammatory cell activation and enhanced generation of oxidative inflammatory mediators. This impacts the lung, increasing the severity of asthma and its exacerbations. This research will evaluate how a synthetic nitro-fatty acid (CXA-10, 10-nitro-octadec-9-enoic acid) suppresses the systemic and airway inflammation that contributes to the obese asthmatic phenotype. Current data support the pleiotropic signaling actions of CXA-10 to induce adaptive signaling actions that beneficially modulate adipokine and cytokine expression and inhibit systemic and pulmonary inflammation. The investigators hypothesize that CXA-10 induced signaling responses will alleviate obesity-related airway hyperreactivity in obese adult asthmatics.

✅ You may be able to join if…
- •Adults (male or female) ages 18 to 65.
- •BMI 30 or higher.
- •Asthma diagnosis for more than 6 months, with lung function and breathing test results showing asthma.
- •Taking asthma controller medicines (inhaled corticosteroids and others such as LABA and/or LAMA) at stable doses for at least 3 months, and stable for 4 weeks before the study start.
- •For females: post-menopausal, surgically sterile, or using effective birth control during the study with a negative pregnancy test before starting.
🚫 You may not be able to join if…
- •Respiratory tract infection within the last 4 weeks.
- •Taken a short course (“burst”) of oral or systemic corticosteroids within the last 4 weeks.
- •Had asthma-related hospitalization within the last 6 weeks.
- •Had 3 or more asthma flare-ups in the past year that required systemic corticosteroids (described as severe asthma).
- •Currently smokes, or quit within the last 1 year (or has a smoking history of 10 pack years).

Is it safe? Who makes sure of that?+
This is a mid-stage study (Phase 2), looking at safety and whether the treatment works. Every study is reviewed and monitored by an independent ethics board (called an IRB) whose job is to protect participants, and care is overseen by licensed medical staff. You'll be told the known risks before you agree to anything, and you can stop at any time.
Will I get a placebo instead of the real treatment?+

No. You do not need health insurance to take part in a research study, and you will not be asked about your immigration status to join. Taking part is about whether you're a medical fit for the study.
